Kongsberg Jazz Festival 2012

Time to start planning your summer holiday? If you are heading for Norway, the Kongsberg Jazz Festival might be worth seeking out. The festival is happening 4 - 7 July, and here are the first artists booked (in Norwegian, but you will recognize the names?).

Lots of artists well known to the readers of this blog, and my first choice would be: Per Jørgensen (trumpet) with Sigbjørn Apeland (organ, harmonium), Morten Qvenild (keyboards), Morten Skage (elbass) and Terje Isungset (drums).
It looks like Arve Henriksen has got the taste for drumming, after banging them with Supersilent. He will visit Kongsberg with a new percussion trio.
Both of these concerts are in a series booked by All About Jazz.

Baro 101

Krar is some kind of lyre, with five or six strings, and is mostly played in Ethiopia and Eritrea.

I am now the owner of my first krar-drum-baryton saxophone-trio! The musicians on "Baro 101" (Terp 2011) are Mesele Asmamaw (krar, vocal), Paal Nilssen-Love (drums) and Mats Gustafsson (baryton saxophone), and it was recorded at room number 101 at the Baro Hotel, Addis Abeba (Ethiopia). They decided to record, after working together during a tour organized by The Ex. Some microphones were put up (as described in the cover), and after one hour they had forty minutes of improvised music ready to be released.

We get two tracks, both of them around twenty minutes long. The music is varied, from pling plong, free improv, and energetic blow outs to something close to lullabyes (towards the end). The sound of the krar is a bit strange to my ears, but still nice, and sometimes the string instrument almost sound like it´s electronic. Asmamaw also proves he´s a great singer.

The Vegetarians

The Vegetarians? Heard about them today! According to CDBaby this is a Swedish - American band with Hans Annellsson, Marc Mollan and John M Gibbs, and they seem to have released at least four albums and a couple of EPs.

The new album "The Calling" (Annelssongs 2011) got me hooked, with cover songs of YES, Genesis, Adrian Belew, Kevin Ayers ("Song from the bottom of a well", "Super salesman", "(An even stranger) Stranger in blue suede shoes"), Bob Dylan, Amiee Mann, Peter Hammill, Chicago, Can and Matching Mole (Robert Wyatt, "Oh Caroline").

Judging by the other records by these artists, they really seem to like doing covers.

300 Acting Spaces

Some people think big! During the project "300 Acting Spaces" (2012 - 2015) there will be arranged 300 free concerts with improvised music. The shows will be streamed live, an active blog will cover the project and finally a book will be published.

The man behind all this is Alex Gunia, and it´s happening in Oslo, Berlin, New York, Beijing and Tokyo, in what is described as "especially designed performance laborartories".

Kick Off will be in Oslo 16 - 18 February, with (among others) Kjetil Møster, Lasse Marhaug and Maja Ratkje.

Oh my! Please check out Håkon Kornstad in a teaser for a film called "Jazzed Out Oslo"!
Uploaded on YouTube by Mezzojazzedout, and I found it over at the hyperactive site "It´s a Trap".

We will also get to see other fine Norwegian musicians in the film, like Arild Andersen, Bugge Wesseltoft, Nils Peter Molvaer, Tord Gustavsen, Mats Eilertsen, Frøy Aagre, Eivind Aarset and Mari Kvien Brunvoll.

David Garland

I have to admit I just realized David Garland existed, but he seems to have friends in several camps.
On his new album "Conversations with the cinnamon skeleton", Vashti Bunyan and Sean Lennon join in (among others!), and Robert Wyatt says that Garland makes “Witty, melancholy songs, arranged and performed with such careful skill and a natural unforced originality".

Venceremos

Working Week were formed in 1983, and in 1984 they released the EP "Venceremos (We Will Win)" (Paladin/Virgin), with Robert Wyatt guesting. The song is a tribute to Victor Jara.
And it´s a great song, isn´t it? I might just start a new round with The Classic!

This version, with Robert Wyatt singing, did not make it to the first Working Week album, but hey, at least it got a video!

Musician, noise maker, record company manager, publisher and festival organizer Lasse Marhaug has made a fanzine called "Personal Best #1. Noise, music and beyond" (Marhaug Forlag 2011).
Sindre Bjerga, Bruce Russell (by Thor-Eirik Johnsen), Chulki Hong, Tommi Keränen, John Wiese, Svein Egil Hatlevik, Ryosuke Kiyasu (by Shane Bowden), Ronnie Sundin, Oren Ambarchi, Daniel Menche, Pentti Dassum, Vivian Wang and C. Spencer Yeh are all interviewed by Marhaug, except where other names are given

This fanzine (well, it´s more like a regular magazine than an old fashioned, messy fanzine) is of course a must for the ones among you hung up on the noise scenes of Korea, Singapore and Finland, but great fun for the rest of us too. I only knew 3-4 artists before reading, but enjoyed reading about the new ones (for me) just as much. The interviews all start bang on, no background info given, and several of them are not about the artists´own music (Ronnie Sundin draws). Oren Ambarchi is mainly talking about AC/DC, C. Spencer Yeh about movies and the opening question for Daniel Menche is "How many times have you broken bones in your body?".

News from Pica and PNL

A couple of new records with noisy stuff for you all. Enjoy at parties, or alone with a cup of tea.

Anders Hana and Paal Nilssen-Love have released a 10" vinyl called "Hosanna and Parallel Sevens I" (PNL 010, 2011). The two tracks are named "Hand near ass" og "Senvill analpose" (!).

Maranata let loose "Pig Magic"(Pica Disk, Pica 029, 2011), a 7" and a CD in one package.
Maranata is Jon Wesseltoft (g, electronics) and Dag Stiberg (sax, voice, electronics). On the 7" Lasse Marhaug joins on electronics, and on the CD one of the tracks is from Oslo´s Støyfest ("Noise Fest") (May 2011), with Maja Ratkje joining. Here you may watch a video from the Støyfest happening.

I´m not too happy with the ass and blood theme/aesthetics (design by Dirty Deeds (PNL) and Lasse Marhaug (Pica)), but noise is nice!

Just an important message for you all, listen to a new Robert Wyatt cover!
Mahieux "Family Life" Quartet recently released "Peaux Dames" on Circum-Disc (2011). The album is a tribute to several drummers, celebrating them by playing their compositions.
What better then, than a version of Robert Wyatt´s "Be Serious" from Comicopera (Domino 2007)!? This is a somewhat more laid back version, sung by Jérémie Ternoy.

Jean-Philippe Ramos

The French musician Jean-Philippe Ramos is a big fan of Robert Wyatt, and has for several years made music based on Wyatt tunes.
Wyattandstuff had a post on him as far back as 2007.

Now he has released an album called "The chansons of Robert Wyatt et moi..." (own label 2010), with covers, or rather music based on, "Dondestan", "Free will and testament", "Amber and the amberines", "Moon in June" og "P.L.A.".

And then it seems like we will hear Robert Wyatt´s voice on the new Get The Blessing album (previous post here). According to Entertainment Focus Wyatt is joined by birds and vehicles.
Citing: "A particular highlight is the unexpected guest cameo by legendary composer & musician Robert Wyatt – a delicious wordless chorale on the languid American Meccano, recorded in a Lincolnshire studio open to the sounds of birdsong and passing vehicles".

Oslo´s improv festival All Ears 2012 is over.
Three nights with four to five concerts each, and one afternoon concert, organized in a very relaxed but professional way (as usual!)
I was still in Bergen Thursday night, but Friday turned out to be great. Let me mention three out of four concerts:
Barry Guy did an absolutely stunning solo concert, playing his own compositions, a Charlie Mingus tune and 100% improvised stuff (if such a thing exists).
Antoine Chessex (sax) and Okkyung Lee (cello) did a wonderful set and Rolf Erik Nystrøm (sax), Kjetil Gutvik (g) and Steve Noble (dr) ended the evening with an energetic show. Nystrøm even played the baryton lying down on the floor.
Organizer Lasse Marhaug told us that the musicians had been eating the traditional Norwegian dish "gammelost" ("old cheese") backstage, and this just might explain Nystrøm´s behavior.

For me Saturday evening was a long evening´s journey into Evan Parker (sax), Barry Guy (bass) and Paul Lytton (dr), who got on stage after midnight and played a great concert. A few of the audience had already left, but those still present were impressed! All of them!

It was quite dark during several of the concerts, but I just might find a couple of (close to) focused pictures in a couple of days, and will add a Flickr link here.

Scorch Trio with Mars Williams

Late 2011, Rune Grammofon released 500 copies of a white vinyl double album with Scorch Trio. Scorch Trio is Raoul Björkenheim (g, el mandolin), Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (el b) and Frank Rosaly (dr), and on "Made in Norway" (Rune 2011) they are joined by sax player Mars Williams.

The recordings were made at Cafe Mono in Oslo (23 May 2011) and at the Nattjazz festival in Bergen (25 May 2011). As usual Scorch Trio seem to improvise the track titles too, and we get sloo, oosl, loos, oslo, genber, enberg and bergen! I missed the Bergen concert (can´t remember the excuse), so I´m happy to have the album at least! Like it a lot!

Scorch Trio did release a live album some years ago too. "Live in Finland" was sold mainly during a 2007 tour, and only 400 copies were made. You may want to hunt that one too, but after you have got hold of the double album from Rune.

Stine Janvin Motland - Motsol

Will you please keep your ears and eyes open for the Norwegian singer (or more vocal artist I guess) Stine Janvin Motland? I heard her again Tuesday evening, performing a fantastic solo set at the Landmark club in Bergen. No words were used, but still stories were told and the sound effects were unbelievable. I swear I thought it was raining around her for a while. (Bergen is a rainy City, but Landmark is pretty dry).

Stine Janvin Motland and Ståle Liavik Solberg have joined forces for several years in the voice-drum-duo Motsol, and they recently released a new album with a little help from several friends, as S/S Motsol. "Parallel Pleasures" is out on Creative Sources (2011), with Motland, Solberg and the extras: Eivind Lønning (tp), Klaus Ellerhusen Holm (as, clar), Hild Sofie Tafjord (French horn), Børre Mølstad (tuba), Nils Henrik Asheim (p) and Per Zanussi (b).
Sounds great!

Charles Bradley

If you have read this blog for some time, you may have noticed that I have to have some soul thrown in at irregular intervals.
This time I´m glad I chose Charles Bradley, and what seems to be his debut album, "No Time for Dreaming", released on Daptone (in 2011 or originally in 2010?), the same company that gave us Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings.
This is funky, hot soul with a great horn section, and Bradley has got a fine and raw voice. A damned good album!

We even get cover versions of Neil Young´s "Heart of Gold" and Nirvana´s "Stay Away"!

Birds live!

All this talk about e-books! Forget it, in this house they run on batteries!
This post was intended for my Norwegian readers only, over at Wyatting, since the book on birds I got for Christmas is in Norwegian. If someone here is interested it´s by Jan Pedersen and Lars Svensson and is called "Fuglesang. 150 norske fugler - beskrivelser og lyder" (Faktum 2011).

The special thing about it is that it has got a sound player that run on batteries, and you may listen to the sounds of the bird that you are reading about. Old school for sure, but the sounds are in fact quite good, and you are warned to use the player to attract birds, stressing them!
Since I don´t have a cat any longer, birds of all sizes are welcome to my garden. I´m ready to listen!

Of course, I managed to make a Robert Wyatt connection in my post on birds, that´s why you get this one too! I have hardly mentioned the fantastic film on birds by Jacques Perrin (2001), called "Le Peuple Migrateur", or "Migrating Birds".
The soundtrack is made by Bruno Coulais, and Robert Wyatt is singing on three tracks (and Nick Cave on one).
When the film was screened in Bergen in 2001 or 2002, I think we were four people present, three bird watchers and one Robert Wyatt fan.

Let me just recommend both the film and the music!

How about a hot mix of swinging New Orleans brass (or is it New York?), free jazz and rock spiced with Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart? Would have suited you just fine? I thought so!
Then go check out Machina´s album "So much for Dancing" (Øra 2011). Tough enough!

If you, for one reason or the other, have not heard the album "Matching Mole" fom 1972, please do. Right now!
On that album you will find one of the best songs to come out of Canterbury, "O Caroline", written by David Sinclair and Robert Wyatt.

Then check out the cover version sung by Brad Scott, on an album called "Garden Parti & Caroline, Yes!" (Zig-Zag Territories, 2011). Quite nice..
As you see (if you followed the link) you may buy it over at Zig-Zag, but it´s also on eMusic and iTunes.

Elephant9: Live at the BBC

You already have Elephant9´s albums "Dodovoodoo" (Rune 2008) and "Walk the Nile" (Rune 2010). Now it´s time to fight for the LP "Live at the BBC", also on Rune Grammofon! 500 copies made, white vinyl, no download code.
Two compositions from each of the two prevous albums ("I cover the mountain top" and "Dodovoodoo" from the first, and "Aviation" and "Habanera Rocket" from the second) were recorded for BBC´s "Jazz on 3" in November 2010. One take and no editing afterwards.

Elephant9 is Ståle Storløkken (keyb), Nikolai Hængsle Eilertsen (el bass) and Torstein Lofthus (dr).

Music fans in Bergen may get a small taste in their own town Tuesday 10 January, when Kjell Bjørgeengen and Keith Rowe will play at the Landmark club. This is a double bill with the fantastic singer Stine Janvin Motland (solo) (and she has performed at All Ears).

Larache

Bukseselger by majasolveig

Maja Ratkje composed music for Kjetil Schøien´s documentary drama "Larache" (link to site in Norwegian), that was staged at the Opera in Oslo in October 2011. The texts of "Larache" were based on interviews of four Moroccan men living in Oslo, and fragments of Jean Genet´s novels and plays.

The piece "Bukseselger" (meaning "Pants seller") is uploaded to SoundCloud by Maja Ratkje herself, and in a comment there she says "It's all recorded with real and toy drums, no samples, and the "flute" is a double reed toy instrument. But no score, so in a way, yes, it's improvised".

Fire! released "You Liked Me Five Minutes Ago" in 2009 and "Unreleased?" with Jim O´Rourke earlier this year, both on Rune Grammofon. Now you may go looking for a 10" vinyl with Fire! and Jim O´Rourke, with recordings from the same sessions as the ones that gave us "Unreleased?" (Tokyo, 12 and 13 Sept. 2010).
"Released!" is a great record too, and only 500 copies made.

Sun Boxes

It´s pretty dark in Norway these days, so a sound installation powered by solar panels, may seem far out, even if it seems to work on frozen lakes!
Sun Boxes is comprised of 20 speakers powered by the sun, with a different loop set to play a guitar note in each box continuously. Read more here.
The man behind the project is Craig Colorusso, and field recordings from Massachusetts are available on 7" vinyl too!

Relaxing in the sun sounds nice for sure, but (being realistic) may we have some running on rain and sleet?

What a trio Sonore is! Ken Vandermark, Peter Brötzmann and Mats Gustafsson, a line up that´s pretty hard to beat!

See and hear the artists play some, and being interviewed in English. Glass artists/organizers (?) are speaking Estonian.

3 - 5 February 2012 both artists will play on ice instruments, during the Ice Festival at Geilo.

I got one of the 157 (!) copies made of Fire Room´s LP "Wels 2008/11/08" for Christmas. The release is a cooperation between Pica Disk and PNL, and is numbered PICA030/PNL011 (2011).
Fire Room is Ken Vandermark (sax, clar), Lasse Marhaug (electronics) and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums).

It seems like Tiger in Oslo still has copies for sale! You might have a chance to check out this super sax-drums-electronics trio on vinyl, or see the video below (recorded in Wels, Austria). Make sure you also listen to their previous album "Broken Music" (Atavistic 2008).

Bat Chain Puller

A "new" album by Captain Beefheart (1941 - 2010) will be officially released 15 January 2012!
"Bat Chain Puller" was recorded in 1976, and has been bootlegged of course, but some of the tracks also ended up on the albums "Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)", "Doc at the Radar Station" and "Ice Cream for Crow" (Wikipedia).

As already mentioned in this blog, Rune Grammofon are ready for Christmas with four new limited edition vinyl releases (500 numbered copies).

And here we are with Bergen´s own The Last Hurrah!!, and their 10" "The great gig in disguise".
Side A is the folk-pop side, starting with a great HP Gundersen song called "Sleeping without you", and following with a cover of Sandy Denny´s "Who knows where the time goes".
Side B is the prog side, with another fine one from Gundersen ("Chromatic Hysteria") and The Last Hurrah!!´s Pink Floyd cover "The great gig in the sky", originally on Mojo´s tribute CD "Return to the dark side of the moon" (October issue 2011).

Chris Watson has been field recording, weather, animals and glaciers for some time, and here he has made a fantastic piece of music/soundscape using recordings from a train ride (originally for a BBC radio production).

On "El Tren Fantasma" (Touch 2011) we listen to the sounds of the ghost train on the tracks, people on the train and on the stations, insects and birds, all beautifully mixed to make a fantastic trip!

"Here Comes Everybody" (Jazzland 2011) contains 7 tunes of hard bop, free jazz and something close to contemporary classical, and hey, I´m just stealing the descriptions from others, it´s jazz OK? I bet this one will manage to end up on some of the best of 2011 albums lists, even if it´s a bit late, so just start shopping.

Musicians (as usual): Fredrik Ljungkvist (sax, clar), Paal Nilssen-Love (dr), Håvard Wiik (p), Magnus Broo (tp) and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (b), all of them in great shape. Ljungkvist composed three of the tracks, Wiik four of them.

The Unthanks’ new album, ”The Songs of Robert Wyatt and Antony & The Johnsons” (Rabble Rouser 2011), is out now. The music was recorded live at The Union Chapel in London, and is probably the first one in a series a bit on the side of their ordinary releases, since it’s subtitle is ”Diversions Vol. 1”.

Previous to this one, The Unthanks, with sisters Rachel and Becky in the lead, have released four albums (the two first ones as Rachel Unthank and The Winterset), ”Cruel Sister” (2005), ”The Bairns” (2007), ”Here’s the Tender Coming” (2009) and ”Last” (2011).
On the albums they play traditional folk, self penned folk and a nice selection of cover songs by artists like Robert Wyatt, Nick Drake, Bonnie Prince Billy, King Crimson and Tom Waits. They have also done ”Sexy Sadie” by The Beatles on a CD included with Mojo magazine.

I guess it will not come as a shock, but on the new album they only sing Antony & The Johnsons and Robert Wyatt’s songs, all done perfectly (well “Dondestan” perhaps too lively!) with a touch of folk and presented in a charming way. Antony’s songs are mostly taken from the album "I am a Bird Now", while Wyatt’s are harvested from "Comicopera", "Dondestan (revisited)", "Cuckooland", "Shleep" and "Rock Bottom" ("Sea Song" of course!).
One of ”Wyatt’s songs” is Norwegian Anja Garbarek’s fantastic ”Stay Tuned”. Nice!

Oh yes, this is indeed a live recording. We hear several coughs, slips of the tounge and wrong starts, but that doesn’t matter really, it’s like being there in person. I play it loud (as suggested in the liner notes too), and like it a lot!

Kjetil Møster is a regular visitor in this blog (and visiting even more often over at my Norwegian blog Wyatting), and he´s first solo album "Blow Job" (+3dB 2011) is being released today (can´t find it on Amazon or iTunes yet). I missed his release party in Bergen Wednesday (poster), but have heard the album, and recommend this mix of just breathing, tender melodies and powerful blowouts.

Still no info to be found on +3dB´s own site, but I seem to remember hearing that other solo releases were planned too. Time will show.

Alog: Unemployed

If you hurry up, you might be able to get your hands on Alog´s "Unemployed", a "box" with four LPs on Rune Grammofon (300 copies)! You will get three white vinyl albums and one black and a numbered fold out paper (no proper cover, and no proper box).

Alog´s Dag-Are Haugan and Espen Sommer-Eide have made some weird electronica, using custom made instruments, samples and guest artists.
I love the sad version of a well known Swedish song called "Båklandets vackra Maja", and a pretty wild story in Norwegian, sung by Jaap Blonk ("Bømlo brenn om natta", libretto: N. H. Møllerhaug). The other guests are Sigbjørn Apeland, Jenny Hval, Signe Lidén and The Sheriffs of Nothingness (Kari Rønnekleiv, Ole Henrik Moe).

This is great fun, but to be honest with you, you really don´t have to fight for a vinyl copy. The CD (or download version) might be just the selection you prefer after all.

I´m still waiting for my copy of the new Robert Wyatt and Antony & The Johnsons album by The Unthanks, so while waiting I checked some Unthanks links

The Guardian present "Rachel Unthank: soundtrack of my life", where Rachel claims that Robert Wyatt´s "Rock Bottom" is the album that "--framed my marriage".

Independent.ie use The Unthanks as an example on artists that think outside the box, to make contact with the audience in these times of "shrinking revenue streams".
The band invited fans to hang with them, join them for music sessions in local bars and even dine with them.

Fan-friendly artists are great, but come on folks, let them eat in peace.

A little info stolen from the project blog "How I Invented Time": "Five years ago David Thomas described a bath tub epiphany to Peter Blegvad at a chance meeting outside an architectural college in Oxford. "Edison, Einstein, Eisenhower and Elvis - The Four 'E's Who Invented The 20th Century." This evolved, in the way of these sorts of conversations, into a Big Idea - a lecture / symposium slamdown to be refereed by Chris Cutler", and now they go live.

Dans Les Arbres

I have to admit I get a bit stressed, when I´m the first one to arrive at a concert in a big church, ten minutes before they are supposed to start playing. But there were obviously no reason to worry yesterday, when Dans Les Arbres played a fantastic concert for ten grown ups an one little baby in the Korskirken church in Bergen. Ivar Grydeland (guitar, banjo), Ingar Zach (drums, percussion), Xavier Charles (clarinet) and Christian Wallumrød (piano, shruti box) are professionals to their fingertips, and even played an extra number for the small "crowd".

The music was quiet and beautiful, and Birk Nygaard´s lights made me feel like I was swimming with the fish in a church aquarium. Now that may not sound positive to all of you, but it is!
Thanks a lot!

Christian Wallumrød was sitting in the dark all the time, and is not present on any of my unfocused pictures, and the baby slept all through the concert.

Statoil is the Norwegian state´s oil company, and the hero of the Norwegian version of this fairy tale has the same name as this installation. Now start wondering.

Symphonies In My Head

Oops, I thought I had blogged this one already, and now all of you have probably heard Håkon Kornstad´s solo album "Symphonies in my head" (Jazzland 2011) already?
I liked (and still like!) Kornstad´s previous solo albums "Single Engine" (Jazzland 2007) and "Dwell Time" (Jazzland 2009), but this one beats both of them.
The pieces are pretty strong melodies, and I was sure they were composed, but all of them are probably improvised. Håkon Kornstad with saxophone and loops in the Sofienberg church in Oslo. Absolutely wonderful!

Kornstad pins several of his most beautiful tracks on the map: "Sweden" and "Turkey, Texas" ("Single Engine"), "Oslo" ("Dwell Time"), and "Damaskus" and "Mandal" ("Symphonies in my head"). I´m waiting for "Bergen".

Here are a couple of videos. The first one is a full office concert (Norwegian Broadcasting Co., NRK) and then "Sweden" played in Perugia (Italia) in July 2011.

Stian Around A Hill

You might want to check out some (not so well known) young Norwegians today? Listen to the the quartet Stian Around A Hill. Their new album "Alle skal få" (meaning something like "It´s enough for everyone") (Atterklang 2011), is being released as a magazine with download code, but it´s been hard to find the magazine (strange, considering the title). I found the music on eMusic, but if you choose iTunes you get the digital version of the magazine (in Norwegian I´m afraid).
The music is really nice jazz, quiet and beautiful as in "God natt" and "Vals", and energetic stuff like "Action" and "Driva kro". Over at Stian Omenås´site he says they work with his chamber jazz compositions with room for improvisations. Call it whatever you like, it´s a good album anyway.

The band: Stian Omenås (tp), Svein Magnus Furu (sax, clar), Ola Høyer (b) and Øyvind Skarbø (dr) (Skarbø also drums in the folk-improv trio 1982).
I pushed their previous album "Lille Stille" (2009) too. That one had Jo Berger Myhre playing the bass, instead of Høyer.

Ken Vandermark and Paal Nilssen-Love never give in! They seem to be all over the place, in one setting or the other. Here you get some solo drumming by Nilssen-Love at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival (Norway) in 2011, and a concert with both of them, that took place in Moscow some days ago.

Go "Like" Ken Vandermark on Facebook, to follow him around. He still writes on the good and bad sides of playing gigs. In Moscow smoke machines and strip tease seemed to be planned for the concert. I won't tell it all!

Ribbon of rust

Now this may give you some ideas on how you may combine two interests, like plants and music. The artist Cecilia Jonsson visited Bergen´s Galleri Fisk (transl: "Gallery Fish"!) this weekend, with her exhibition "Ribbon of rust".
I usually don´t post local exhibitions from Bergen in this blog, but this one was too good to hide. Jonsson combined sound installation and plant growing. She had scraped iron oxide from a cassette recording of Vivaldi´s "Four Seasons", and mixed this into the earth where a nettle was growing. The plant then just sucked Vivaldi up through it´s roots, and the artist (some way or the other) managed to recorded the plant, and let us hear.

It was pretty hard to recognize Vivaldi, but still quite interesting! What next? Metal, jazz or country? We could get some serious Wyatting in the greenhouses!

Eloquent Vandals

The publishers Kontur Forlag (who also gave us the book "Street Art Norway") recently published a book on Stavanger´s street art festival Nuart.
In "Eloquent Vandals" we follow the festival from it´s beginning as the little brother of Numusic in 2001, with a focus on digital art, and from 2006 the kind of street art festival it still is.
The book is peppered with great photos of street art by Nick Walker, Chris Stain, Herakut, Blek Le Rat, Dotmasters, Swoon, Blu, Pøbel, Dolk MIR and lots more, and the texts are written both in Norwegian and English.

Editors are Martin Reed (the founder of both Numusic and Nuart), Marte Jølbo and Victoria Bugge Øye.

The book will probably soon be sold by Amazon?

Since Stavanger is a marked city after the festivals, I have managed to catch some of the festival art too.

Corroncho

I have had Phil Manzanera and the Columbian artist Lucho Brieva´s album "Corroncho" on my iPod for a long time already, and now it seems like it will be released in the USA too (8 Nov). "Corroncho" is a name given by people from the capital Bogota, to people from Barranquilla, and the Spanish lyrics tells the tale of two latino males. I don´t speak Spanish, but still smile from these songs, and please be careful, I guess the weak ones might start humming or dancing too!

These musicians participate: Robert Wyatt, Paul Thompson, Enrique Bunbury, Chrissie Hynde, Annie Lennox, Quimi Portet, Gilad Atzmon og Aldo Lopez Gavilan.

Anders Hana (Noxagt, Ultralyd, MoHa!, Circulasione Totale Orchestra) has released a solo album on Drid Machine. "Dead Clubbing" is another beautiful piece of vinyl on this company, with music (six tracks) only on one of the sides. 300 copies made.

The trio is Frode Gjerstad (alto sax, clar), Jon Rune Strøm (b) and Paal Nilssen-Love (dr). "East of West" was recorded in Stavanger in April 2011, while practicing for the May tour, and "MIR" was recorded live at the club MIR (surprise!) in Oslo in September 2010. Good stuff on both of them.

The Icicle Works: "Sea Song"

In 1983 the band The Icicle Works released a cover version of Robert Wyatt´s "Sea Song", on the EP "Up here in the North of England". This spring saw the release of a 3xCD box version of the album "If you want to defeat your enemy, sing his song", and on this one we find "Sea Song".

We have to have a football post today folks! My team Molde celebrate 100 years this year, and won their first Norwegian title, with two matches to go!
Thanks to coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his team too! Manchester United striker Solskjaer played for Molde before he went to Manchester.

Fante

I love the books of the Los Angeles author John Fante, but I doubt if I will re-read them. I have done that with other authors I adored when young, and they did not strike me as powerful any more. I´m sure John Fante´s books still do, but I think I will just keep them in my memory for a while longer.

As a student in Bergen (long time ago!) I randomly picked up "Wait until spring Bandini" in a shop, and was completely blown away by the prose. Later I realized he was some kind of cult hero, and got his other books too. The four books about Arturo Bandini, "Wait until spring Bandini" (1938), "The road to Los Angeles" (1933), "Ask the dust" (1939) and "Dreams from Bunker Hill" (1982) , are available in a one volume paperback, if you want to try.

John Fante´s son Dan Fante, recently published the biography "Fante" (Harper Perennial 2011). The subtitle "A family's legacy of writing, drinking and surviving" tells it all I guess.
I must admit I did not know Dan Fante, and thought this biography was all about his father. Of course we get the history of John Fante here, and his struggle to survive by writing for Hollywood and his fight to be accepted as a great novelist, but this is just as much a book about the father and son relationship between John and Dan Fante, and Dan´s alcohol and drug fueled life, finally becoming an author himself.
This is from the Fante´s epilogue: "My father was an artist of great rage and passion, perhaps born out of his own time. He was not a nice guy".

A good read, and with lot´s of private photos too.

I might want to read Dan Fante´s book of poetry called "A Gin Pissing, Raw Meat, Dual Carburettor V-8 Son-of-a-Bitch from Los Angeles" (2003), having a tendency to fall for crazy titles like that.

I have already mentioned the folk impro trio 1982´s, new album "Pintura" (Hubro 2011) in the blog (see here). The record has been out in Norway for a while (great album indeed!), but for one reason or the other, the rest of the world has to wait to late November.

Hayward/Lo/Taxt

Three men with tubas improvise for half an hour. The first ten minutes what sounds like one singular tone is vibrating like a tense wire, the musicians walking on the wire. Then they fall down into the deep, even taking long breaks before they rise again towards the end of the piece.
I would guess that this meaningless description will get only the worst among you hooked, but head on over to SOFA, and see if you get it then.

Robin Hayward is a new one to me (he plays a microtonal tuba), while Martin Taxt has visited the blog earlier with Koboku Senju, Jæ and Splashgirl, and Kristoffer Lo was here with Pelbo. I am sure that you will agree that the music of Hayward/Lo/Taxt is more like Koboku Senju than Pelbo!

"Hotel Interludes" is being released by Curling Legs (2011), and on the video Dale plays "Prolleprep", on prepared piano.
