The end of February festival

Let´s finish off this long February with a videofestival. Lots of Norwegians in there as usual, I´m afraid.

The first ones out are Nils Petter Molvær Trio (N.P. Molvær, Stian Westerhus, Erland Dahlen), and then follow Arild Andersen & Paolo Vinaccia, Frøy Agre & Andreas Ulvo and Mats Eilertsen Quartet, all from the documentary "Oslo Jazzed Out".

Say hello to Øystein Moen & Stian Westerhus in White, with Susanne Sundfør, recorded at The Henie Onstad Art Center (early February 2012).

And let´s go to Japan for couple of concerts with Dans Les Arbres (Xavier Charles, Ivar Grydeland, Christian Wallumrød and Ingar Zach), first one with Jim O´Rourke, and then Otomo Yoshihide.

Baboon Moon

I guess you know already, but I still want to tell you. Nils Petter Molvær (trumpet and misc.) has got himself a new band, a trio with Stian Westerhus (guitar and misc. - "too many pedals") and Erland Dahlen (drums and misc.) They just released "Baboon Moon" on Sula Records (2011), a great album with a perfect mix of "sad and beautiful" music, like on "A small realm", "Prince of Calm" and "Coded", and powerful tunes like "Mercury Heart", "Sleep With Echoes", "Recoil" and "Baboon Moon" (Susanne Sundfør guesting on vocal).
All the way we feel and hear a dark sound carpet under the melodies, probably made by all the misc. they are playing. On "Blue Fandango" Erland Dahlen even get his singing saw going!

I like pretty much all of Molvær´s stuff, but my guess is that I will play "Baboon Moon" even more often than the other albums! Go buy!

I even like the cover girl Maggie (fold out cover with lots of pictures)! Photographer Per Maning knows how to take pictures of animals. Check his "Early works" here.

PUNKT 2011 - Day three

I had really hoped to see Evan Parker perform live with Ingar Zach and Stian Westerhus at the Sørlandet Art Center Saturday afternoon, but we got three 20 min long solos, Parker first, then Zach and finally Westerhus. When Stian Westerhus entered, the dominance of the quiet improv was over for good at this year´s festival. He went rock and noise from the word go, but quieted down with some bow playing on the guitartowards the end, and I observed that even Evan Parker pulled his fingers out of his ears. Three fine solos, but a pretty wild mix!

On the main stage at Agder Theater Arve Henriksen´s album "Cartography" was performed, with Jan Bang, Erik Honoré, Ingar Zach, Eivind Aarset, Anna Maria Friman, David Sylvian and Arve Henriksen. This is still an absolute beautiful piece of music, but it was perhaps a little bit more dark now, adding some more excitement to the music.

The great Susanne Sundfør owned the stage, with a strong performance of her own songs, almost disappearing in smoke. I was afraid we would have a Spinal Tap moment there, when she had to cough, but she was OK!

The professors Helge Sten and John Paul Jones led the first of Saturday´s seminars at the Agder University, demonstrating the KYMA system. This is a bit too much technology for me (some graphic interface stuff for musicians), but with good teachers, and some playing to demonstrate, we had a nice hour at school.
Later in the evening they played the final concert of the festival, starting off with what looked like an iPad performance, but ended up in a massive electronica show. Cool!

Oh yes, there were live remixes too. My favorites of the evening happened to be Nils Petter Molvær and Guy Sigsworth making a hysteric disco mix out of Susanne Sundfør and Sacred Harp´s concerts, and Molvær at it again, with Jan Bang, Marilyn Mazur, Eivind Aarset and Erik Honoré, remixing Minibus Pimps.

Nils Petter Molvær videos

Expect a new Nils Petter Molvær album this autumn, produced by Stian Westerhus. On the first video here we see Nils Petter Molvær Trio at Jazz in Marciac (August 2011), with Stian Westerhus and Erland Dahlen. On the other one Molvær is playing in a duo with Jan Bang in Ostrava (July 2011) (look for more clips on YouTube).

Spin Marvel

Spin Marvel is the band of drummer Martin France, and I gladly admit that both the drummer and the band are new to me. I followed a recommendation on Twitter,  and checked out their second album "Spin Marvel 2. The Reluctantly Politicised Mr. James" (Edition 2010). This is a fine mix of electronica, jazz and rock, and should be a treat to people who dislike genre borders.

The other musicians are  Tim Harries (bass), John Parricelli (guitar) and two Norwegians (both of them last seen at the  Punkt 2010 festival) Terje Evensen (percussion, sound editor) and Nils Petter Molvær (trumpet).
The three tracks with Nils Petter Molvær stand out, and he fits in just perfect, both when he´s up front and when he´s just playing on top of an electronic avalanche. Damned good!

"Black Dog Company" is dedicated to Hugh Hopper and Ian Howarth.

Read a better review over at "The Jazz Mann".

Food: Quiet Inlet (ECM 2010)

Food now seems to be the duo Thomas Strønen (drums, electronics) and Iain Bellamy (tenor and soprano saxophones). On their new album "Quiet Inlet" (April 2010) they are joined by Nils Petter Molvær (trumpet, electronics) and Christian Fennesz (guitar, electronics).
What do you get? Beautiful melodies and elegant soundscapes! This is perfect both on a late Saturday and an early Sunday morning.

I can´t find any title related to food on "Quiet Inlet"! If quiet and beautiful music scare you off, you might find some more to chew on on some of their earlier stuff, with Arve Henriksen (trumpet, voice) and Mats Eilertsen (bass) in the band. Titles on the album "Veggie" (Rune 2002) are all about food ("Tofu", "Chickpea" "Mushroom" etc), and the other day I found a used copy of their first album "Food" (Feral Records 1999) with inlays, pasta and laurel leaf!

The discography before "Quiet Inlet", all stolen from Thomas Strønen´s site:
Food (Feral Records 1999)
Organic and GM Food (Feral Records 2001)
Veggie (Rune Grammofon 2002)
Last Supper (Rune Grammofon 2004)
Molecular Gastronomy (Rune Grammofon 2007)

…AND POPPIES FROM KANDAHAR

I´m a bit late with Jan Bang´s "...And Poppies From Kandahar" (Samadhisound, May 2010), but I promise you, it has been on heavy rotation on my Ipod this summer.
It is a fantastic album, and deserves a place on the shelf among albums by the musicians on the album, like Nils Petter Molvær, Arve Henriksen, Sidsel Endresen and Jon Hassell! These are all artists he has worked with earlier too.

I just steal this from Samadhisound´s site on how Bang is composing : “As I often do, I started working on instrumentals which I then presented to the musician that I thought might benefit the track – not unlike the process of making the Cartography album with Arve. … I knew I wanted to write music that had references to my influences, but where I could use my own dialect. I wanted to work with both composition and improvisation on an equal level – using contrasting forms, different dimensions, randomness, parallel directions which weren’t necessarily meant to express anything specific other than to work within the frame of the piece itself.”

David Sylvian wrote the titles for the music, and they make a story for the soundtrack:

1. The Drug Mule
2. Self Injury
3. The Midwife’s Dilemma
4. Passport Control
5. Who Grooms The Child?
6. Heidegger’s Silence
7. Abdication And Coronation
8. Suicide Bomber
9. Taking Life
10. Ululations
11. Exile From Paradise

Nils Petter Molvær and Biosphere

Moldejazz will never give us any peace! Third year in a row now they have a free outdoor concert at seven o'clock on Saturday morning, the last day of the festival!

More than 1500 crazy people were in the park today, to see the Break of day in Molde concert, with Nils Petter Molvær and Geir "Biosphere" Jensen.
The electronics, the ambient and the beautiful trumpet playing mixed nicely with the bird sounds, the aeroplanes and some snoring too.
Amazing!
